In October 2024, young professionals and students met in Budapest at the third edition of EYEN’s European Youth Energy Forum to discuss the challenges and opportunities related to sustainable cities and community engagement, residential energy consumption, mobility, energy poverty, financial mechanisms and energy-efficient urban planning.

Prior to the five-day event, participants were engaged for two months in an online process aimed at analysing key issues and developing actionable plans to transform cities while ensuring meaningful youth engagement in the energy sector.

[Opportunity] Call for Young Energy Ambassadors ✍️

🌍 Are you ready to take your passion for energy to the next level?

Each year, approximately 30 young people (18 to 35 years old) from across Europe are selected as Young Energy Ambassadors for a one-year mandate. The Ambassadors attend and participate in the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) in Brussels with expenses covered.

EYEN is a long standing EUSEW partner and was represented by Marco Gervasi – EYEN Board Member – in the cohort of Young Energy Ambassadors of 2024.

Young Energy Consumers in 2024: the report is out 📝

🤔 What is the role of young energy consumers today? Developed by our Young Energy Consumers Task Force (YEC), the “YEC 2024 Moving Forward Report – Youth at the Centre of the Energy Transition” highlights the role of young energy consumers in shaping policies, tackling energy poverty and driving community-led solutions.

📝 The YEC Task Force has analysed EU regulations and identified gaps in energy policies for youth, conducted qualitative interviews capturing insights from grassroots initiatives across Europe, and organised a quantitative survey investigating broader trends in youth energy challenges (stay tuned for the results!).

🌍 Our case studies from all over Europe – Greece, Poland, Belgium, Portugal and the Netherlands – present initiatives that empower communities in energy, from youth-led housing renovations, to revitalising post-mining regions and combating energy poverty.

The Report’s key recommendations include:
🚀 strengthening youth participation in decision making
💌 financial support for young renters
📈 expanding community energy access.

The findings of the report were essential for EYEN’s contribution to the first Youth Dialogue with the new Commissioner for Energy and Housing, Dan Jørgensen on the 18th of February. The Dialogue involved a cohort of 30 young energy experts, who engaged with the Commissioner on the development of his priorities for energy policy in the EU, and worked towards finding new avenues for youth collaboration with the EU.

EYEN welcomes its new Governing Board 🎉

🌱 EYEN is proud to announce its 2025 Governing Board! 🤝 Federico Barbieri, Carlotta Ferri, Jonas Henke, Marco Gervasi and Ariadne Rentería Castañeda will be steering our network this year, and making sure that youth plays a central role in shaping a fair and sustainable energy future.

🌍 They are a team of dedicated young professionals from diverse backgrounds, brought together by a shared commitment to youth empowerment and sustainable energy. Stay tuned with EYEN to follow their journey!

EYEN at E-World: Europe’s largest energy trade fair 🌍

In February EYEN was among the presents at Europe’s largest energy trade fair: E-World energy and water in Essen, Germany. The fair is a central meeting place for the international energy industry, with a diverse forum program for the energy sector and a career day for future specialists in the energy industry.

📣 Jonas Henke represented EYEN at the fair in a panel discussion on the 13th of February with Katrin Furhmann from ENGIE Germany with the title “PPA, Speicher, H2 und viel Kreativität für den nächsten Schritt der Energiewende”. The panel, part of a series titled “CEO meets student” focused on the current topics around PPA, storage and hydrogen.

Energy Transition Careers Compass awarded finalist in Inclusive Employment 📣

✨The Energy Transition Careers Compass Task Force is proud to announce that its digital tool empowering youth to discover careers in the energy transition has been selected as a finalist for Inclusive Employment!

🤝 We want to thank the European Network of Innovation for Inclusion – a community of over 500 organisations funded by Acción contra el Hambre – for selecting us for the finalist place as part of its Best Practices of 2024. We are proud to contribute to the Network’s mission of creating a more inclusive workspace in Europe.

🧭 Back in 2023, EYEN established a new task force mapping job roles across the energy transition job ecosystem. In partnership with Green Jobs Tree and with the support of Youth4Climate, they created the Energy Transition Careers Compass, a tool that is now available online (on computer and mobile) and that helps youth navigate the market for green jobs.

📣 More news on the project is coming on October 24th at the 12th European Forum on Inclusive Employment in Madrid, where the ETCC Task Force will be presenting the tool along with future plans for the project! The Forum is an inspiring place in which to learn about a more inclusive social and labor ecosystem, by recognising and sharing best practices and facilitating the meeting of key actors, favouring collaboration and networking. Including youth in energy systems:
EYEN at the Conference on Affordable Energy 💡

🚀 How to ensure an affordable energy supply for all? The Conference on Affordable Energy, held by the European Economic and Social Committee at the beginning of summer, pooled proposals, with youth taking the centre stage. In the panel “Promoting energy affordability by fostering inclusion” Carlotta Ferri from EYEN’s Governing Board delivered the key messages:

🚀 Youth matters, both as energy intensive consumers and as potential change makers. But it is often left out of the picture.

👉 Inclusion means not just integration into energy markets, but also research and policy on the needs of consumers. Today, young people are often overlooked in research studies and statistical analysis (for example, on consumption flexibility potential) because of their group’s heterogeneity. Their life situations — termed “temporary” and untraditional” — get them easily disregarded by energy policies. In a recent study of Student Energy, only 11% of young responders answered to have been reached by their local government, while 41% indicated the they have never been consulted.

🎯 EYEN is doing its part by running studies to better guide decision-makers in defining the youth consumer profile and to understand how to adapt regulations and policies to be more inclusive and targeted. Find out more with this insight into the work of the Young Energy Consumers Task Force!

A sneak-peek into our solutions 👇

📈 We can zoom in on youth age – or consumer groups – to provide accurate statistics on their vulnerability to energy poverty.
📱 We can remunerate and incentivise flexibility from the demand-side in energy markets, avoiding the lock-in of specific consumers with limited control on their flexibility (e.g. students) thanks to careful design. And use the digitalisation of the target group to the system’s advantage.
🎓 We can teach correct energy behaviours, because studies have shown that appropriate educational programmes help young people to become more responsible and proactive energy users.

Join the next generation of decisions makers
at the IRENA Youth Forum 🌆

🚀 Are you between 16 and 35 and want to contribute to accelerating renewable energy deployment to achieve climate objectives? Are you looking for a space to connect your ideas on the future of energy with the ones of young energy change makers, global thought leaders and government representatives?

👉 The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has just opened its call for up to 35 participants to the sixth IRENA Youth Forum. The Forum will convene from the 9th to the 13th of January 2025 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, in concurrence with the fifteenth session of the IRENA Assembly – the organisation’s ultimate decision making authority where Heads of State/Ministers meet. Participants will be fully funded, including accommodation and travelling. Send your application to participate to the Forum by September 24th!

📝 The 2025 IRENA Youth Forum aims at strengthening youth networks and connecting them with global decision-makers. With high level plenaries, experts debates & roundtables, workshops and seminars, interactive activities, youth circles and high level bilateral meetings, participants will contribute to the Agency’s mission of advancing the sustainable development agenda.

IEA opens the call for youth speakers at COP29🌱

🚀 The International Energy Agency (IEA) is launching an application process to identify youth speakers for its events at COP29! The call is part of the Agency’s commitment to ensuring that youth voices are meaningfully represented in its engagements.

🌱COP29 – the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change – will gather in Baku, Azerbaijan, from the 11th to the 22nd of November 2024. The Conference is a unique opportunity to meet global policy makers engaged in negotiations, young participants, businesses and many more, on the topics of climate and energy.

✍️ Would you like to have a say in the global effort towards climate change mitigation and adaptation? Send your application through this form by October 11th, 11:00 PM CET and join us at COP29! Further requirements:

🎯 Youth speakers must be from accredited organisations who are already confirmed to attend COP29

Join us at the 10th European Sustainable
Cities and Town Conference 🏙️

🏙️ Did you know that in 1994, in the city of Aalborg – Denmark – more than 3000 local authorities from 40 countries signed a common Charter pledging to promote sustainability in their communities?

🤝 This year, the 10th anniversary of the Aalborg Charter will see parties returning in town to reconsider how cities can play their part in the Green Deal — through Local Green Deals, responding to the ongoing climate emergency, and raising the bar for community action in Europe. The 10th European Conference on Sustainable Cities & Towns will be hosted by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability – from the 1st to the 3rd of October, and is now open for registrations.

📑The programme of the conference gathers local and regional governments, European and international institutions, organisations, research communities, businesses and civil society. Expect workshops on shared governance, financing climate resilience, empowering youth, powering renewables through circular strategies. 🌱 Check out the full programme and speakers for more information!

✨The Student Conference for Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Development is open for registrations! The annual event is held by students at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technologies of Skopje, North Macedonia. It aims at bringing students, professors, researchers and professionals together to discuss innovative solutions in energy efficiency and sustainability. You can submit your research papers, or showcase your projects and products by sending an abstract by the 10th of October.

Unwrapping EYEN’s 2023 🎁🎄

EYEN grows & establishes task forces 📈🚀

Our volunteers’ stories, competences and ambitions define how big of an impact we can make, and how far our voices can reach. 🚀 That’s why at the beginning of this year, we welcomed new volunteers & established new task forces, focusing on topics of pressing relevance for youth in the energy transition: the Young Energy Consumers task force, and the COP28 task force with its Energy Transition Careers Compass (ETCC) online tool. Plus, a dedicated team started preparing our flagship event, EYEF2023.

Brussels hosts EYEN’s second gathering 🏙️

What can you do with 2.5. days and a young team passionate about the energy transition? A lot! ✨🎉 Last June, the Secretariat and the Board of our Federation hosted its second-ever gathering in Brussels for its teams & task forces, discussed and aligned on the future and the present of the organisation. Through team-building workshops, we shared and listened to old and new colleagues, visited and exchanged with the EU institutions, whose engagement in youth and the energy transition is so important. 🤝

at the European Sustainable Energy Week ♻️💡

Through 2023, EYEN continued its partnership with the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW), the yearly event on renewables & efficient energy use organised by the EU Commission and energy stakeholders.

At EUSEW we connected with professionals & EU institutions and participated in the Commission’s European Youth Energy Day, which invited the first cohort of 30 Young Energy Ambassadors. Their own proposals to shape the clean energy transition were presented on the last day of EUSEW (rewatch here!) 📸

🤝This year, EYEN is contributing to the European Sustainable Energy Week for the 3rd year in a row, to bring youth voices to the heart of one of the main yearly events defining the implementation of the energy transition.

Making young energy consumers heard
at the 15th Citizens’ Energy Forum 🏛📊

👉 Did you know that youth is an often neglected vulnerable group when it comes to energy consumers’ policies? We have set out to change this. Since the creation of the Young Energy Consumers task force back in April, the team has been working with the clear objective of making young energy consumers more visible in energy consumer policies in the EU (check out their story for more!). 🚀

Their first focus of the task force was energy poverty, a topic that is particularly important for a just transition, and to ensure no one is left behind. After almost a year of research & cooperation with stakeholders, the team presented its findings and their solutions at the 15th Citizens Energy Forum in Dublin. #EYEF2023: presenting 6 solutions
for youth engagement in the energy sector 🦜

How do you create the space for youth to voice its opinion on the energy transition and collaborate with energy stakeholders towards concrete action? EYEN has been doing it since 2022 by organising its yearly European Youth Energy Forum (EYEF). Cause for the European energy transition to be just & inclusive, it needs to accommodate the needs and participatory rights of all.

Last November, EYEF gathered 40 young energy professionals of 30 nationalities at📍Fraunhofer Energy & Climate in Berlin with one goal: reviewing 6 solutions for better youth engagement in the energy sector out of the 12 developed during #EYEF2022. 📝 Youth, who are key actors in shifting the current paradigm and conventional procedures – with engagement, knowledge, legitimacy and diversity.

During the online work preceding the event, and the 3-day conference in Berlin, stakeholders such as Statkraft, the European Commission, the German Federal Ministry for Economics and Climate Action, the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research, the German Renewable Energy Agency and Elia took the stage with participants 🎤and helped them design concrete roadmaps stakeholders are called on to implement across the education, policy-making and private sectors.

A sneak peek at (some) EYEF2023 proposals to boost youth in energy 🚀

🏛 The European Youth Energy Hub: a one stop shop for Youth Energy Engagement, is designed to deal with the need for skilled workers (a potential 270% increase compared to current jobs in energy) and the current fragmentation of the information on opportunities within the European clean energy sector. This labour and skills gap can be addressed by creating a comprehensive website for youth to discover civic engagement, educational and vocational, employment opportunities, and allow them to make an informed decision about future life choices.

🎓 EmpowerED – the University Module for Student-Led Energy Transition Workshops for high school pupils – codifies a syllabus for a module for third-level institutions and addresses the gap in knowledge about climate and energy related topics across youth. EmpowerED encourages intergenerational dialogue surrounding energy by having university students teach the module, and creates an inclusive space for orientation & education.

The Energy Transition Careers Compass
launches at COP28 🧭

EYEN brought solutions to the discussions at 2023’s climate conference – COP28 – in Dubai 🌱At the summit’s side events, our COP28 Task Force launched the Energy Transition Careers Compass (ETCC), the comprehensive digital tool for energy careers. 🎯The COP28 task force launched the Energy Transition Careers Compass at an official UNESCO side event, in a panel with youth representatives and researchers from the Global South and the Global North 🌍

🎯EYEN hosted its side event at the COP28 Finnish Pavillon on the impact of global energy targets (between renewables & energy efficiency) and how to empower youth to reach those targets 🌱 with speakers from the private and public sector, energy companies and operators, a network of local and regional governments committed to sustainable urban development and many more! 🎤

🎯 EYEN co-organised its first networking event with +40 youth from all over the world, and called for international cooperation among youth organisations for the deployment of solutions to bridge the skills gap in the energy transition 📊

🧭 The Energy Transition Careers Compass (ETCC) empowers youth to discover careers in the energy transition, and grows the energy transition workforce.

🚀 The permanently growing online platform – developed by EYEN & Green Jobs Tree – addresses the need for more skilled workers in the energy transition (more than 30 million jobs could be created in clean energy by 2030!). It makes it easier for young people and professionals in transition to identify their career path by mapping a diversity of job roles across the green energy ecosystem, giving insights into the required skills.

EYEN presents the *new* Energy Transition
Careers Compass at COP28🌱🧭

This year’s climate conference – COP28 – is taking place in Dubai from November 30 to December 12 and EYEN is bringing solutions to the discussions 🧳 Over the last months, our COP28 Task Force has been working hard to ensure that energy transition careers are part of the annual conference that brings representatives (and youth!) from all over the world to discuss climate mitigation and adaptation. What is happening in these two intense weeks? 💭

✅ The official launch of the Energy Transition Careers Compass (ETCC) 🧭, the online tool empowering youth and professionals to discover careers in the energy transition. By 2030, a total of more than 30 million jobs could be created in clean energy, efficiency and low-emissions technologies (according to IEA reports). But — growing demand is meeting with skilled labour shortages, and young people face uncertainty in identifying their role within this landscape. We are here to help 🤝. The permanently growing platform maps a diversity of job roles across the green energy ecosystem, giving insights into different careers available, required skills and a description with more info. ✅ 3 high-level side events with key speakers across sectors 🎤 – because youth needs to be considered as a relevant stakeholder group in the roundtables, and the capacity of the youth workforce in the energy transition boosted (featuring concrete data 📈, essential green skills and solutions!). COP28 & the Energy Transition Careers Compass: in the words of representatives of the COP28 Task Force

Federica Matone, a Public Policy Master’s student at Sciences Po Paris, is an incoming intern at the UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa. After completing a UN Secretariat internship in climate communication, she joined the EYEN COP28 Task Force to enhance COP28 side events, and work in networking and youth engagement in the energy sector.

“From COP28, I expect a renewed emphasis on integrating youth perspectives at the forefront of climate action and the energy transition. By presenting the Energy Transition Careers Compass as an instrument to build energy transition careers, we hope to empower the next generation, enabling them to play a pivotal role in driving the energy transition and guiding us towards a sustainable and resilient future.”

Aretina Stefani earned her Law Degree from Queen Mary University of London and is currently pursuing an LLM in Energy and Climate Law at the University of Groningen. In 2021, she interned at the Centre for Environmental Law Education Research and Advocacy in India, and represented the European Law Students Association in the Regional Forum on Sustainable Development of 2021. She attended COY17 and EYEF2022.

“From COP28, I expect a paradigm shift in the way we think about the energy transition. It is not enough to decarbonise existing systems, we must address how people access and consume energy, who has ownership and control over its production, and what makes people feel empowered towards generating energy in a fair and inclusive way. To truly achieve a net-zero future, we need a global response to the unjust divide in the policy mindset and to restructure our energy systems with hands-on solutions.”

Pedro is a European Funds Specialist at EDP, a global energy company. Supported by a background in Environmental Engineering and Public Policy, he oversees diverse global projects, managing various stakeholders, and closely monitoring different energy policies. He can often be found attending energy conferences, a passion that he now balances with his role as a Content Manager at the Energy Transition Careers Compass.

#EYEF2023: presenting
6 solutions for meaningful youth engagement 🦜

Since 2022, EYEN organises the European Youth Energy Forum with the mission of creating the space for youth to voice its opinion and collaborate with energy stakeholders towards concrete action.

The first edition in Lisbon gathered 45 young participants and resulted in concrete proposals for meaningful youth engagement in the European energy transition, presented to EU and Portuguese officials. The second edition of EYEF has just happened in Berlin: find out everything about it below in our special report from behind the scenes! 🍿👇

How do you connect the voice of youth in the European energy transition? We did it with 40 young energy professionals at📍Fraunhofer Energy & Climate in Berlin and one goal: reviewing 6 solutions for better youth engagement in the energy sector.

👉 In the two months leading up to the in-person event, participants collaborated in 6 groups – one dedicated to each proposal – to create a step-by-step shareable roadmap for stakeholders to implement the solutions in their organisations, companies or institutions:

🎯 The creation of a Youth Energy Council
🎯 Energy transition workshops for high school students
🎯 One-stop-shop for youth energy engagement
🎯 Just Energy Transition Trainings
🎯 Work-study programmes
🎯 National Talent Pool for blue collar workers in the energy sector

🤝 In Berlin, they finalised their work with the help of experts from the private and public sector like Statkraft, the European Commission, the German Federal Ministry for Economics and Climate Action, the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (ISI), the German Renewable Energy Agency (AEE) and Elia. In different formats, stakeholders from the energy sector joined our three-day discussions, from 31 October to 3 November, and took the stage 🎤 with the participants.

Young Energy Consumers
at the 15th Citizens’ Energy Forum 📣

🏛 In April 2023, EYEN created the Young Energy Consumers (YEC) Task Force with an ambitious goal: making young energy consumers more visible in EU policy at a time when they are seriously underrepresented (see our story for more!)

📚Over the last months, the YEC Task Force has built knowledge on youth as an energy consumer group in Europe and the specific topic of energy poverty, collaborated & presented its findings to stakeholders such as the Energy Poverty Advisory Hub (EPAH) and the European Commission.

📝 On the 8th of November, the Task Force presented its statement to the 15th Citizens’ Energy Forum in Dublin, the yearly event organised by the European Commission and the Irish Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) to create a bridge between stakeholders involved in EU energy consumption.

A sneak-peek into the YEC Task Force’s findings 👇 📑

📊 Young energy consumers (18-35 years old) earn an average monthly salary ranging from 1400 to 1600 euros a month. They predominantly live in rented homes, which have low energy efficiency ratings (classes C-E).

🌡They can be considered as extremely vulnerable to energy poverty because of their reduced disposable income and substandard housing, often with poor insulation, and lacking access to affordable energy services.

❌ No country has implemented specific energy policies tailored to address the unique needs of youth. Youth is not classified as a vulnerable group, and data on youth experiencing energy poverty remains scarce.

EYEN elects Governing Board 📣
& welcomes new member organisation 🏛

🚀 Our network is growing! EYEN’s latest General Assembly on the 15th of November reunited all our member organisations to connect on the network’s achievements for 2023 and think about the future of EYEN. 💭

👏👏 For starters, the organisation elected new officials in our Governing Board, which officially represents and manages the federation and is now composed by Federico Barbieri (President), Carlotta Ferri (Vice-President), Jonas Henke (Treasurer), and Marco Gervasi (EYEN Development). 🌱They will be supported by our incoming Advisory Board, which provides strategic advice on our activities and all aspects of the work of the organisation (nominees to be appointed soon, upon confirmation!)

With the last General Assembly, we also welcomed a new member organisation: the Young Energy Professionals Forum. 🎊🎊🎊

👉 The YEP Forum is a community of over 2000 members at Energy UK – from analysts to engineers and many more – that promotes and inspires the next generation of energy industry leaders, providing opportunities to connect, develop, and recognise success. invites youth participants to E-World 🌊💡

Bundesverband Junge Energie e.V. (BJE) was established in 2018 as an organisation dedicated to fostering student initiatives in the energy industry and its sustainability based in Aachen, Germany, and became a member of EYEN in July 2022. Since its founding, the organisation has been growing steadily, and had very intense last year – packed with discussions with businesses, stakeholders, and a renewed board! 🌱

👉 BJE represents the voice of youth at Germany’s main energy sector conferences, and this December it is inviting young participants to participate to E-World, the leading European trade fair for the energy and water industries organised by Messe Essen and con|energy and taking place from the 20th to the 22nd of February in Essen, Germany.

The fair is the perfect place to get to know more about core topics such as energy generation, efficiency, trade, transport, storage and green technologies, connect & collaborate on innovative solutions for the energy transition and participate to the fair’s career day. ♻️📑

#EYEF2023 is kicking off! 🎊🎊 What to expect today? 🚀

👉It’s not too late to join us! At 9:30, discover the INTEGER PROJECT presented by Fraunhofer, and AEE – the German Renewables Energy Agency. The project looks into different forms of participation processes in the energy transition and how to best engage people in different energy sectors like solar, wind and hydrogen, and includes youth by “future workshops” to determine how they see their role in the energy transition. ♻️

🍿Behind the scenes, the 2-months online journey has started in September for our 50 participants, who have been busy reviewing last year’s youth engagement proposals and creating a step-by-step sharable roadmap for stakeholders to implement the proposals in their organisations, companies or institutions.

With an eye on feasibility and impact, participants have been improving and finalising six youth engagement proposals 📝 that are at the centre of this year’s event:

How to make young energy consumers visible?
The journey of the YEC Task Force💡🚉

We have got news from one of our latest projects: the Young Energy Consumers Task Force is presenting its research results! 📣 Since the creation of the Task Force in April, they have been working with the clear objective of making young energy consumers more visible in EU policy, between shedding light on their challenges and providing success examples for their inclusion.

🚉 Let’s travel back to November 2022, to the 14th Citizens’ Energy Forum, the yearly event organised by the European Commission and the Irish Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) to create a bridge between stakeholders involved in EU energy consumption. At the event, Carlotta Ferri – Vice President of EYEN – spoke about the lack of inclusion of youth in energy consumer policies and the neglected challenges & needs of young energy consumers. She raised awareness on how youth’s lack of education, financial resources and opportunities limit the impact that people can have as proactive consumers.

👉 Carlotta’s speech was eye-opening to the audience of consumer organisations, which made EYEN realise that young energy consumers were seriously underrepresented at the EU level. 🌱 To create a background in knowledge on the topic of young energy consumers in Europe, in April 2023, EYEN established the Young Energy Consumers Task Force, which aims at becoming a recognised, legitimate and official advocacy body giving a voice to young energy consumers.

In September 2023, the task force was represented by policy analyst Halina Jagielska at the Annual Conference of the Energy Poverty Advisory Hub (EPAH), the leading EU initiative to eradicate energy poverty at the local level. Her presentation highlighted that even though most countries are increasingly concerned by energy poverty in youth, very limited data on the topic is available and no country classifies youth as a vulnerable group. To create adequate policies, we need more information on young energy consumers and their specific situations. 📝

On the 23rd of October, EYEN’s President Federico Barbieri participated in the launch of the European Commission Recommendation & Staff Working document on energy poverty on behalf of our organisation. The meeting was opened by Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders and Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson, and participants signed the renewal of joint common principles for enhanced consumer protection during the winter. 📝

Giulia Staffetti has a Master’s Degree in Industrial Engineering and has always been fascinated by energy topics. She is currently working for a major energy company in the hydrogen sector.

In April 2023, she joined EYEN and has since been working together with the YEC Task Force Team to ensure that young people are at the forefront of energy discussions and solutions.

“As a young energy consumer, one of the most pressing issues is increasing the access to affordable energy efficiency solutions. This can help in reducing utility bills and support the transition to cleaner energy. While costs for renewable energy tech like solar panels and efficient appliances are declining, they remain out of reach for many, and younger people especially may struggle with upfront costs, as most live in rented properties where homeowners are not incentivising to fund upgrades.”

Dr Zenan Ahmed is currently employed as a Senior Energy and Sustainability Engineer at WSP in the UK. Her professional interests revolve around the intersection of energy, sustainability, and data. She has previously held roles at Swansea University as a researcher and worked as an Energy Pricing, Forecasting and Trading Analyst at an energy company in the UK.

“We want to be in control of our choices by leveraging smart technologies and inclusive solutions that cater to our specific problems. This can only be achieved through youth engagement in regulatory and policy development discussions. To address energy poverty in youth – which is often overlooked – a comprehensive and multi-faceted approach is essential to empower the current generation in areas like education, employment and technology. This approach will have a direct bearing on mitigating energy poverty, recognising that these young individuals will play a pivotal role in shaping our future world.”

#Reskill EU: join the event for new jobs
in energy and transport in Europe 📈

Did you know that today the renewables energy sector needs over 1.2 million skilled workers? And that this number is set to increase annually until 2050? 🧐

👉This tells us that to move the energy transition forward, we need to understand which skills to develop and train professionals accordingly. As part of this effort, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) and DG Research & Innovation are hosting the one-day conference #ReskillEU in Brussels & online on the 8th of November 2023. Policy-makers, researchers and stakeholders will discuss the need for new skills in the areas of clean energy, how to attract the best (young!) talent in the energy sector and ensure the development of necessary knowledge in green skills. ♻️

On the “Sustainable Energy” panel (14:30 – 16:00 CET), task force coordinator Marco Gervasi will present EYEN’s project to build energy transition careers – the Energy Transition Careers Compass (find out more below!)👇

Task Force in action:
the Energy Transition Careers Compass 🧭

Back in April 2023, we announced some big news! 🎉🎉 The EYEN team was growing, with the establishment of the COP28 Task Force. After a few months, that Task Force turned into the Energy Transition Careers Compass Project. The project was born from the necessity of preparing for the next COP (and more!) by working on one of the most pressing topics for youth & energy: building careers in the energy transition.

And why the Energy Transition Careers Compass? 🚀
✔️ Because change is more than engineering 🤝 and together with can address the skills gap in the sector that could grow by 30 million jobs by 2030.
✔️Because youth deserves to get a better insight into the different career paths available, to make informed decisions about education & career choices.
✔️Because as an international youth-led network, we want to ensure youth representation in all job roles for sustainable energy.

The Energy Transition Careers Compass 🧭 is a new project of the European Youth Energy Network, created to provide youth with the possibility of discovering careers in the energy transition.

The online tool that our dedicated task force is developing includes career paths for different competences: we cared about making it accessible, comprehensive and inclusive, with sectors ranging from research and development to installation, operation and maintenance, policy and roles in civil society, youth advocacy and NGOs. 🌱

The Energy Transition Careers Compass is travelling the word! 🌍 On the 12th of August, the task force was invited by the youth-led association Young Energy Specialists and Development Co-Operation (YES-DC) to present its project in the context of the International Youth Day, themed “Green Skills for Youth: Towards A Sustainable World.” In the panel, Marco Gervasi, coordinator of the project, and Deogratias Mbaz – founder of Assure Uganda – affirmed the necessity for more clearness in describing to youth the different energy transition pathways and the competences needed to join the transition’s workforce.

🍿 Behind the online scenes🍿
of the 2023 European Youth Energy Forum!

Since then, our dedicated Implementation Team has worked to broaden the reach of the position paper, which was presented, among others, to European and Portuguese authorities.🏛

👉 This year, EYEF is moving to Berlin, where it will be hosted by Fraunhofer ENIQ from the 30th October to the 3rd November 2023, in partnership with the European Energy Network, the German Energy Agency (DENA), Fraunhofer and sponsored by E-ON – electric utility company, and Elia Group, the Trasmission System Operator.

🍿Behind the scenes, the 2-months online journey has started for our 50 participants, who have been busy since the beginning of September, working on two main objectives:
🎯 Reviewing last year’s youth engagement proposals and updating them, taking into account the feedback from different relevant stakeholders in the European energy sector (present at the event!)
🎯 Creating a step-by-step sharable roadmap for stakeholders to implement the proposals themselves and move towards meaningful youth engagement in their organisations, companies, or institutions.

“EYEF felt like a compass to direct me towards the energy change that the EU is going through. When I read last year’s position paper, I felt inspired by the fact that, as youth, we are at the centre of the energy transition. The platform EYEF provides is undoubtedly huge: by teaming up with the entire EYEF team, I expect to expand my horizon and become a part of the energy transition by connecting to like-minded people.”

Yusha Pradhan is an environmental enthusiast, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, pursuing a Master’s in Water Resources and Environmental Management.

“What I expect from this year’s EYEF is a comprehensive and clear roadmap that will help Europe harness the creativity and inventiveness of its youth, to power innovation in energy policies and technologies, as well as enhance its productivity for the transition towards a green, resilient and autonomous Europe.”

Dimitris Symeonidis is the founder of the Decentralised Solutions Global Network, providing integrated services to local communities to transition to energy and agricultural autonomy through decentralised production. He is also an independent advisor in energy policy and geopolitical risk management, a policy leader for YES-Europe, as well as a researcher and Ph.D. Candidate in circular agrifood and energy supply chains at the University of York.

“EYEF is a special occasion for us young professionals and students in the energy sector to contribute to the quest of increasing youth engagement in the energy transition. I am looking forward to exchange great ideas with my peers, to learn, be inspired, and produce something impactful.”

Jonathan Ngund was born and raised in Cameroon, but has lived in Germany for about 8 years now. He has obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering at RWTH Aachen University and is currently at the end of his Master’s Degree in Energy Engineering. Jonathan is working as a research assistant at the University’s energy research centre, and as a software developer for an IT-consulting company.

Young Energy Researchers Conference & Awards

Are you a young researcher in the fields of energy efficiency or biomass? This year, EYEN is an official promotion partner for the next Young Energy Researchers Conference and Awards, held on 5 March 2024 in Wels – Austria – in the context of the World Sustainable Energy Days (WSED). WSED is the leading annual conference on renewable energy and climate neutrality. It will show how to realise the high policy ambitions of the upcoming EU legislation, and how to strengthen the clean energy markets, by focusing on practical solutions. 🚀

If you work in the conference’s areas, we encourage you to send your paper by the 10th of October 2023, to have the opportunity to interact with other researchers and industry experts from all over the work, be peer-reviewed and receive feedback from a high-level scientific committee, and finally, be considered for the Best Young Energy Researcher Awards with 1000 euros each as prize money. The opportunity is fully funded, as organisers cover the cost of accommodation, meals, participation and local transport for up to 60 selected young researchers.

📚 A SNEAK-PEEK INTO OUR READING OF THE MONTH: YES-EUROPE 📚

In its latest Policy Brief, titled “Implications of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism for the Western Balkan Countries” YES-Europe’s Team describes one of the mechanisms at the forefront of the European Green Deal’s implementation: the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, or CBAM.

What is CBAM and why is it important to know more about it? 🧐
CBAM is a measure to prevent carbon leakage, meaning the situation where, for reasons of costs related to climate policies, businesses may transfer production to other countries with laxer emission constraints. The measure particularly affects companies that import to the EU in high-polluting sectors such as energy and industry (in particular, cement, iron & steel, aluminum, fertilisers, electricity & hydrogen), which will have to pay a price for the emissions connected to their imports.

How does CBAM affect Western Balkan Countries?
Western Balkan Countries or WB-6 (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia) are not member states of the European Union, and would therefore be affected as importers through CBAM. Taking into account that the WB-6 exports around 6.3 terawatts-hour (TW/h) of electric power to the EU, is it possible to mitigate the effect of CBAM and through which instruments?

EYEN’s second gathering in Brussels:
3 facts on EU institutions for your next trip🏙

What can you do with 2.5. days and a young team passionate about the energy transition? A lot! ✨🎉 From the 22nd to the 25th of June, the Secretariat and the Board of our Federation hosted its second-ever gathering in Brussels, discussed the future and the present of EYEN, aligned across teams and task forces, by sharing and listening to old & new colleagues, and finally connecting in person 🤝

Together, we visited the EU institutions, whose engagement in the youth+energy transition is so important. And, in our travelling, our team collected 3 facts on the EU (we did not know about) for your next Brussels trip! 🏙🧳 PS. Want to be part of the team and join us next year? 💭 The European Parliament has more than 20 Committees, with topics that range from industry, research & energy to disinformation. Are you interested in any of their discussions? Their sessions are live-streamed here!

🏛 The Council sets the EU’s overall political direction and it works in 10 configurations, depending on the topic of discussion. The Presidency of the Council changes every six months, and is handed over to one EU member state to another. Instead, the staff of the Council is permanent, and helps member states to prioritise and plan which legislation moves forward.

📝 The European Social and Economic Committee (EESC) is the voice of the European civil society, and its three groups – workers, employers and civil society organisations – adopt opinions on legislation in their plenary sessions. Among the current priorities of the Committee, we find a broader and more significant youth engagement through, for instance, the EU Youth Test.

EYEN powers youth inclusion
at the European Sustainable Energy Week 💡

From the 20th to the 22nd of June, we brought youth & energy to the European Sustainable Energy Week in Brussels! But how to meaningfully include youth in the biggest annual event dedicated to renewables and efficient energy use in Europe?

🎯 EYEN advised organisers on youth inclusion at the Conference! The European Youth Energy Day invited the first cohort of 30 Young Energy Ambassadors, whose own proposals to shape the clean energy transition were presented at EUSEW’s closing session. Among the Ambassadors, Livia Kalossaka, VP of YES-Europe, received the first ever Young Energy Champion Award 🏆 from Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson for her trailblazing efforts to advance clean energy technologies and inspire other young changemakers (see her in the 📸 taken at our stand)!

🎯 YES-Europe (Young Leaders in Energy and Sustainability), a founding member of EYEN, successfully hosted a workshop on how youth-driven energy communities shape the clean energy transition. The session with Cleanwatts, OÖe Energiesparverband, and REScoop.eu analysed the main issues afflicting the energy system today – ageing infrastructure, energy poverty, and increasing demand – and the role of youth as part of collectives in energy.

Meet the partners 🤝 of the second European Youth Energy Forum #EYEF2023!

🎉🎉 The European Youth Energy Forum of 2023 is taking 50 young energy changemakers to Berlin, for a five-day live event from October 30th to November 3rd! Our recently-selected participants are already at work on improving last year’s 12 proposals on how to achieve meaningful youth engagement in the energy transition at the European and local levels.

To reach our goal of creating space for youth to discuss the energy transition with stakeholders, we have partnered with organisations and agencies that make this event possible. 🎤 But what are their stories and why do we believe they can help moving the energy transition forward? 🧐

👉 EnR is a voluntary network of 25 national energy agencies from the EU member states. It acts as a bridge between the EU and national, regional and local activities through information exchange, benchmarking, best practice, knowledge-transfer and collaborative projects. The topics of its eight thematic working groups range from transport, to renewables, energy efficiency, behaviour change, and water-energy nexus.

👉 DENA is the German Energy Agency, and it is one of the many national energy agencies that are part of EnR. For this year, they took over the presidency of the network. It studies solutions for climate neutrality, and connects stakeholders to make impactful programmes such as Start Up Energy Transition (SET), which helps start-ups in finding financial support.

👉Fraunhofer’s Cluster of Excellence “Integrated Energy Systems” is a trailblazing innovator, and it is going to be hosting this year’s event in its Berlin hub: Fraunhofer ENIQ. It combines the competence of several research institutes to address the system and market integration of high shares of variable renewables into the energy system.

BJE: young energy professionals
at the 2023 Congress of the German Association of Energy and Water Industries 🌊

Bundesverband Junge Energie e.V. (BJE) is one of EYEN’s members and the umbrella organisation in the field of youth energy associations in Germany. They support and promote the independent networking of student associations and initiatives in the energy industry to enable them and their members to engage in an interdisciplinary, research-oriented, and open-ended dialogue on energy industry issues. 💡

This month, Bundesverband Junge Energie and its member organisations been given the opportunity by YES Consulting to participate in the BDEW Congress of 2023. The Congress – organised by the German Association of Energy and Water Industries – takes place yearly, and it is an unmissable event to focus on this year’s energy-related developments.

Our members participated in the Young Professionals Initiative, and had the opportunity to meet peers as well as stakeholders from the energy and water sectors to discuss hot topics such as crisis management and the transformation of the gas industry, the green traffic transition and the sustainable heat transition.

Reboot’s Youth Academy on climate change
& energy in pictures 📸

How can youth organisations share accurate information on the energy transition with the next generation of changemakers? 💭 In June, Reboot, one of EYEN’s founding member organisations, has started a spark in this direction and reached a milestone in its goal of dismantling stigmas and misconceptions surrounding sustainability, by fostering clear and accessible information. 📝

In close partnership with E-REDES – one of the main Distribution System Operators in Portugal – Reboot has co-organised its first Youth Academy for high school students in Portugal. During the four full days of workshops and activities, Reboot’s young energy professionals met students with diverse hopes and expectations for the Academy, and exchanged insights on climate change, its relationship with the energy transition, but also renewable energies, electrification, and the role of the younger generation as future consumers, electricians, and key players in the greening of the energy sector. 🌱

To address the lack of youth engagement in decision-making at the EU level, the European Youth Energy Forum returns in its second edition. Berlin, 30th of October to 3rd of November 2023, we’re coming! 🎉

The European Youth Energy Forum is the yearly flagship event of EYEN. Its aim is to create a space for youth to voice its opinion on the energy transition and collaborate with stakeholders towards a meaningful youth engagement in the energy sector. 💡

Do you remember EYEF’s first edition? 🧐 Since then, a lot of work has been done by our EYEF Implementation Task Force, to ensure that the 12 concrete proposals found in #EYEF2022’s s position paper reach as many stakeholders as possible. This year, the work will get even more hands-on, as the Forum will gather 50 young people based in Europe and between 18 and 35 years old, to work on the improvement & implementation of the proposals.

Participants will take part in weekly online sessions for the 2 months prior to the event, to prepare for a live 5-days event in Berlin to have discussions and workshops with organisations that are already implementing or interested in implementing the proposals. 📝

Our latest stories in youth + energy 🚀

A new agenda for democracy and youth engagement at the European Economic and Social Committee 🏛

Since 1957, the EESC has acted as a consultative body of the European Union, providing advice to the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council in their activities. It is composed of independent members representing economic and social interests. 📝 These members come from three different Groups: (I) employers, (II) workers, and (III) civil society.

“38% of the countries of the world are not free and do not have a democracy.” 🧐 What does that have to do with EYEN, youth, the energy transition and the EU? At the end of April, Carlotta Ferri – Vice President of EYEN – was invited at the European Parliament for the election of the new President of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC): Oliver Röpke.

In his nomination speech, Röpke highlighted the crucial role that the EESC has in strengthening the EU’s democratic legitimacy and effectiveness, and in responding to the lack of involvement of civil society around the world. Röpke reaffirmed that youth participation is fundamental and recalled successful examples of youth inclusion, such as the EESC’s section dedicated to climate change, which works closely with schools and finances youth delegates participating to the UNFCCC’s yearly Conference Of the Parties (COP).

What next then for youth in the EESC? The measures proposed include:
1. The creation of participatory EESC citizens’ panels 💭
2. Increased digitalisation of the proceedings 💻
3. A more representative and inclusive EESC 📈
4. Including youth delegates in the EESC Groups 🌱
5. Involving youth in the EESC’s substantial work through the establishment of an ad-hoc advisory council. 🏛

As EYEN, we share the EESC’s renewed commitment: a meaningful youth inclusion at the EU level. 🎯 And that’s why we are already in communication with the EESC’s section dedicated to energy to discuss the involvement of youth delegates on the topic, to create another successful example of engagement.

In pictures: YES-Europe’s Annual Conference 📸

What does sustainability really look like? What systemic changes are needed to sustain the energy transition? Which type of energy changemaker are you – an organiser, a knowledge builder, a conversation starter, or more? 💭 These questions (and many possible answers!) were at the centre of YES-Europe’s Annual Conference in Athens, organised in collaboration with Resilient Planet at the end of April and gathering young energy and sustainability enthusiasts from all around Europe.

The three-day event kicked off with a presentation on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy – to then move into several projects that, in their capacity, contribute to the achievement of SDG7: from Pianeta Energy and their work on how to calculate the environmental impact of a conference, to the Greek Centre of Research and Technology’s work in research & innovation for sustainability, and the WWF’s workshop on Eat4Change, the international project co-funded by the EU to create an enabling environment for healthy and sustainable diets. And as EYEN, we could not miss the event! Tiago Vicente, Board Member of EYEN and Energy Engineer at ADENE, presented our main flagship event, the European Youth Energy Forum (EYEF), as a powerful tool to reshape youth engagement in the European energy transition.

And among all the discussions on the energy transition, the importance of renewables in accelerating it, the climate crisis and the inequalities it exacerbates, the Conference highlighted the key role of youth and women in making a change. A change that starts small, as participants observed at their visit to Symbeeosis – creating sustainable products from their fields and beehives – and Helios Eco Lab – an off grid multi-functional environment that provides a home, workshop & farm for its creator David Davis and up to 5 volunteers, demonstrating that zero-waste is possible.

BJE in Berlin: working on the state of the energy transition in Germany 🏙

Bundesverband Junge Energie e.V. (BJE) is one of EYEN’s members, and the biggest and most important umbrella organisation in the field of youth energy associations in Germany. They support and promote the independent networking of student associations and initiatives in the energy industry to enable them and their members to engage in an interdisciplinary, research-oriented, and open-ended dialogue on energy industry issues. 💡

What is there to do in Berlin for youth organisations in the energy sector? 🧐 At the beginning of May, BJE and its member associations Energie Forum Aachen e.V., Essener Energie Club, Akademischer Energieverein Leipzig e.V., Kine, RE Con e.V., met in the German capital to intensify the contact among the associations.

At the heart of the city, they discussed on the state of the energy transition in Germany with Katharina Hartz, former BJE and now Project Officer Power at Agora Energiewende – an evidence-based think thank that informs policy-makers, economists, researchers and civil society on strategies to advance climate neutrality (if you’re curious to know more, you can find their most important findings here!).

The organisations also met with TransnetBW GmbH to discover more on grid planning and the energy transition, and with AFRY Management Consulting to work on a practical case study on PV storage. To conclude your trip in Berlin, the team also advises a trip to the city’s Energy Museum, where you can find over 5000 exhibits from all aspects of power generation, and even control the start-up process of a combined cycle power plant! 🔌

What was 2022 like in EYEN? Throwback with us > 📸

1. Implementation Task Force – #EYEF2022🦜

The European Youth Energy Forum is the yearly flagship event of EYEN. It’s aim: to create the space for youth to voice its opinion on the energy transition and collaborate with energy stakeholders towards concrete actions for a more inclusive transition. 💡

Do you remember EYEF’s first edition? 🧐 After three months of preparatory work in identifying the barriers and the opportunities of youth engagement, the first EYEF took place in 2022. The event brought together 45 young energy changemakers from all across Europe, to create a position paper on the role of youth in the future of the European energy transition. The Forum included sessions for participants to discuss the main hot topics related to the energy transition at a 5-day live event in Lisbon. At the end of the event, participants presented in their position paper 12 concrete measures for meaningful youth engagement in the energy transition in the policy, education and the private sectors.

This year, it’s time to put these proposals into action. To do so, EYEN has created the Implementation Task Force for #EYEF2022! 🎊 The team has been busy defining priority proposals to be implemented – based on their impact, scope of implementation (regional, national or European) – and creating connections with stakeholders to effectively put these proposals into action.

Curious about the task force’s next steps, on both the European and the Portuguese level?🧐 The two sub-teams of the task force focus on one big ambition each:

1. In a pilot phase, selected proposals will be implemented in Portugal with the relevant partners. This phase will provide valuable insights on the implementation, feasibility and the real impact of the proposals. 🚀

The “Portuguese” Team is taking the proposals that can be applied at a regional/national level, with the aim of collecting data on their output & involved stakeholders in a monitoring report. 📝

2. The “European” Team is setting up contacts with European stakeholders and is aiming at receiving commitments towards implementing the proposals from relevant partners.

“Today’s youth are among the most active in civic participation, but we don’t feel heard by decision-makers. As a result, young people are increasingly interested in programs that give them a voice and enable them to participate in decisions that will impact their future. And that’s exactly what EYEN is doing!”

Vanessa Faia holds a Master in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Lisbon. She is a technical expert at ADENE, the Portuguese Energy Agency, in the Mobility Team. She was previously a member of the New System’s Team working on water efficiency in buildings (AQUA+ rating) and fleet on energy efficiency (MOVE+ rating) and Innovation Team, where she was engaged in water efficiency and the water-energy nexus project development. At EYEN, she is Team Leader of the #EYEF2022 Implementation Team.

2. Young Energy Consumers Task Force 💡

The newly formed Young Energy Consumer Task Force aims at creating a background in knowledge on the topic of young energy consumers in Europe, a topic which is not often taken into consideration by many energy policies in member states. 📝

The main short term objectives for the Task Force are: knowledge-building on youth and its role as energy consumer group, and an effective and meaningful EYEN participation, based on the knowledge accumulated, to the 15th Citizens Energy Forum (CEF) in November 2023. CEF is the yearly forum creating a bridge between different stakeholders involved in energy consumption and paving the way for more inclusive regulations and solutions. 💬

Stay tuned, because we’ve got plans for the future! In the long term, the Task Force aims at cooperating more strongly with the regulators and the already established consumer bodies in the EU. The aim? A recognised, legitimate and official advocacy for young energy consumers. ♻️

“I joined EYEN as a Young Energy Consumers Task Force member, because I think it is extremely important that we, as youth, do have a say in this particular topic and the ability to shape our future. I also believe that organisations like EYEN are very much useful for the young researchers and activists to evolve and internationally network in the fields that are especially interesting for them.”

Halina Jagielska is a law student from Cracow, Poland. Halina is professionally and academically involved in the development of photovoltaic farms and offshore wind farms in Poland. Halina is also an energy efficiency analyst and anti-war and anti-fossil fuels activist in Young Friends of the Earth Europe and in a Polish grass-roots group called Wschód. In EYEN, she is Policy Analyst of the Youth Energy Consumers Task Force.

3. COP28 Task Force 🌿

This year, the United Arab Emirates will host one of the most important international yearly events on climate change policy: the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The event will take place from the 30th of November to the 12th of December 2023 in Dubai, and it will gather world leaders, NGOs and industries to discuss measures for improved climate change mitigation and adaptation. 📑

This year, EYEN has created the COP28 Task Force to ensure participation of the network to the Conference through a meaningful contribution, in order to bring to the event the voices of the youth organisations it represents. 🚀

“A crucial aspect of environmental and energy justice is equal participation in decision-making processes. The voice of young people is far too often not (sufficiently) taken into account. I joined EYEN because it is driving change towards greater youth inclusion, and thus more participatory justice for the younger generations.”

Yanika Meyer-Oldenburg is now starting her new position as Sustainable Finance Policy Officer at the NGO Germanwatch. Previously, she has worked as a trainee for UNDP’s Nature, Climate and Energy Team in Jordan and at the EU Commission in the Directorate General for Energy. She holds a Master’s in Environmental Policy and Regulation from LSE. Her interests lie in challenges connected to environmental and energy justice. In EYEN, she is part of the COP28 Task Force.

Young leaders in Energy and Sustainability Europe (YES-Europe) is one of the founding members of EYEN. It was created through an initiative of the EPFL University of Lausanne in Switzerland, and it initially brought together 50 students from 9 European countries for its first annual conference in May 2016, to find meaningful ways to make a difference as youth in the energy field.

Since then, it has grown internationally to have an impact at the EU level. Its projects include policy reactions, policy trainings and knowledge-sharing addressed to the younger generations of energy change-makers.

EYEN’s three resolutions for 2023 📑🌟

1) Providing a space for youth to develop its stand on the energy transition📝

In 2023, we will keep creating spaces that allow youth to express their voice and have an impact. That’s why we’re coming back with our flagship event – the European Youth Energy Forum (EYEF). The second edition of the Forum will give young energy changemakers the opportunity to attend debates with experts of the energy sector and to keep improving the 12 proposals towards meaningful youth engagement in the energy transition developed in November 2022 at the first EYEF ever.

Have you got a passion for communications, logistics or sponsorship? Would you like to contribute to the event’s position paper? Reach out with an application by the 5th of February for #EYEF2023 or for one of our open positions at EYEN to work in a dynamic team of young professionals and be part of a project that makes participants key players in energy + youth engagement! 2) Expanding the federation to represent youth from all over Europe🌿

EYEN is the federation uniting energy-focused youth organisations in Europe. By 2022, 11 member organisations joined our network of networks to connect, exchange information as well as be empowered also in campaigns and high-level discussions! 🎉🎉 Over the coming months and years, we will be working hard on advocating for the meaningful engagement of young people in the energy transition, bringing members together in task forces to work on topics of interest to them. To kick off 2023, we are calling on non-profits in the youth + energy field to join us as members of EYEN.

3) Ensuring youth’s voice is heard at major energy conferences and forums💭

EYEN’s was born to address to the lack of youth access to high-level policy decision-making in the energy sector. Still today, one of the main missions that we have is to work directly with the industry, the policy makers and our member organisations to create meaningful connections and be able to participate in key decision-making processes at the European and international level.

In 2023, we are doing that by having young representatives participating in and presenting at the major energy conferences and forums in Europe and beyond – among which the European Sustainable Energy Week of 2023, the IRENA Youth Forum of 2023, the next Citizens’ Energy Forum and COP28. Establishment and our first EYEN gathering 🏙

In early 2022, the European Youth Energy Network was officially established as an international non-profit organisation, opening up more possibilities for our members and the youth we want to represent. 📜

To celebrate and co-work on the plans for 2022, our team also met in Brussels for the first time in person (after many months of online work!) at the first EYEN Gathering and engaged with representatives of DG ENER from the EU Commission, exploring the EU’s strategy for the incoming year.

Building the first European Youth Energy Forum 📝

Where to start with engaging youth in the energy sector? We started with the first ever European Youth Energy Forum. In the spring of 2022, recruitment, logistics and sponsorship started working in full force on the event and regular meetings of the position paper team began at the end of summer. The team defined a concrete methodology for the position paper that would later become the highlight of #EYEF2022 and, together with participants, explored the challenges, possibilities and barriers to youth engagement in the European energy sector.

Partnering with policy-makers at #EUSEW2022 🌱

In 2022, we wanted to make sure that when the future of the energy transition in Europe was discussed, youth representatives were going to be there. That is why we partnered with the European Commission at the European Sustainable Energy Week – the main yearly high policy level event to exchange experiences, best practices and sustainable energy ideas between policy-makers and stakeholders of the energy sector. Rewatch with us the streaming of the Youth Energy Day with our former Vice-President Miguel Mósca, and “Repowering Europe” and “Towards energy aware behaviours” with our Director of Secretariat Jacopo Sala! 📺

EIT Awards: EYEN wins 3rd place for inspiring change 🚀

Big news for our federation in 2022: on the 11th of October, the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) awarded EYEN’s President Federico Barbieri and the federation with the 3rd place for innovations that inspire change for a sustainable future (CHANGE Award) and the 3rd place at the public choice award! 🎉✨ The prize of 10 000 euros will enable us to continue our work supporting young stakeholders in the energy sector in 2023.

Youth, educators, policy-makers and industries come together at #EYEF2022 for a better energy transition🦜

From the 19th to the 23rd of November, the work of many months came to an end: the first European Youth Energy Forum was finally here! In Lisbon, 45 young Europeans from 23 countries came together and finalised their position paper containing 12 concrete proposals for meaningful youth engagement in the energy transition. The paper was presented to public and private stakeholders – from the Portuguese Parliament to the energy corporation Galp, and many more in progress – and a special team is already coming together to work on its implementation! So watch out for updates on this and #EYEF2023.

Representing youth as energy consumers
at the 14th Citizens’ Energy Forum ♻️

At the end of 2022, EYEN was invited as a panelist to spread awareness on challenges and initiatives of youth in their role as energy consumers at the annual European Citizens’ Energy Forum. At the 14th edition of the event, EYEN’s Vice-President Carlotta Ferri, presented to an audience of consumers, regulators and industry representatives. She explained how youth’s lack of education, financial resources and opportunities limit the impact that young people can have as responsible and proactive consumers.

If 2022 was an important year for EYEN, we have even more ambitious plans for 2023. To achieve them, we’re building a strong team of courageous creatives & communicators, clever engineers and lawyers, visionary policy freaks and cheerful team leaders. “The ongoing shift in the European energy sector involves a paradigm shift – conventional procedures and solutions are no longer enough to face the challenges. Youth are the ones who see their future put at risk, they have acknowledged the urgency of the energy transition, and are energised to create change. From the 19th to the 23rd of November, EYEN hosted the first ever European Youth Energy Forum in Lisbon, and the participants reached key milestones in bringing youth closer to the energy sector. The event provided a space to connect youth in the European energy transition, giving them a unified voice. With the event, EYEN managed to bring youth from all across Europe together for a week, to bridge them with different stakeholders of the energy sector – from academia to privates and policy-makers.

🎉🎉🎉BREAKING NEWS: The position paper resulting from the event contains 12 concrete proposals to improve youth engagement in the European energy transition. It was already presented to policy-makers at the Portuguese Parliament – more precisely the Environment and Energy Commission – to the CEO of the integrated energy operator Galp in its company headquarters, & more. On the occasion of the paper presentation in Lisbon, the President of EYEN Federico Barbieri and the President of ADENE – the Portuguese Agency for Energy – Nelson Lage, signed a Memorandum of Understanding for future cooperation.

EYEF’s position paper on the role of youth in the European energy transition:
a call for action 📝

At the first ever European Youth Energy Forum, we gathered 45 young participants from more than 20 countries, with diverse backgrounds but a common interest: placing youth at the heart of the European energy transition. Their exchanges with representatives from the energy sector present in Lisbon and their preparatory work produced a position paper titled “The Role of Youth in the future of the European energy transition” which identifies structural barriers across Europe preventing the success of youth action – such as ageism and youth washing – and 12 specific measures to improve youth engagement in the energy transition.

The measures focus on 3 fundamental areas: public policy making, knowledge transfer and education, and the private sector. Their rapid implementation is essential to the creation of an efficient framework for meaningful youth engagement. That is why, as EYEN, we are committed to presenting the paper to the broadest audience possible and supporting effective changes.

✨ EYEF’s 12 measures
for meaningful youth engagement✨

1. Youth Energy Councils (YECs): an advisory board at the national level to institutionalise youth representation and have significant impact on policy-making;
2. Energy Youth Standard: a framework of qualitative and quantitative metrics to avoid youth washing and tokenism in the energy sector;
3. Youth National Energy Survey: the collecting of youth opinions on the energy transition strategy – to be conducted every two years online;
4. Energy transition workshops for high school students: involving university students teaching to their younger peers as part of their curricula;

5. Green Skills for Educators: with the cooperation of local academic partner institutions, provide pre-university educators with thorough knowledge on the energy transition;
6. Compel universities to provide SDGs and ET courses: the curricula will be checked through national accreditation programs and cooperation between universities;
7. Youth NEETs Just Energy Transition Training: a free accessible program for youth Not in Employment, Education or Training, prioritising marginalised groups;
8. One-stop-shop for youth energy engagement: a platform to access opportunities of education and engagement in the European energy sector;

9. National Talent Pool for Blue Collar Workers within the Energy Sector: a website that aims at connecting job seekers to work opportunities in clean energy;
10. Label for youth friendly companies, associations and public organisations: an awards-based labelling system to recognise actors increasing youth participation;
11. Youth non-executive board programs and positions: to integrate youth in company boards through dedicated positions;
12. Work-study programs in the energy sector: in agreement with all stakeholders, enabling young workers to obtain university degrees while employed.

Lindsay Bell-Etkin is Fundraising and Development Manager at Student Energy and Ambassador at FLIK – Female Laboratory of Innovative Knowledge.

Zorana Antovska is a Master’s student in International Relations, European Integration and Diplomacy. She is working as an instructor at her faculty, and in several institutes on projects related to the energy transition and climate change.

“My experience in the first European Youth Energy Forum can be described in two words – encouraging and inspiring. The energy transition is a huge challenge globally, which requires a solution that comes from multiple sectors and levels. The act of gathering people with different backgrounds, coming from different generations, is a perfect first step towards finding the right solution. ”

Thomas Romano is a student in European and International Public Policy and Politics at Bocconi University and at the London School of Economics.

“EYEF was such an inspiring event where I had the ability to meet and exchange with amazing people from a diversity of backgrounds, united by a passion for the energy sector. Building the paper together and getting to present it to ADENE and Galp is an experience that I will always remember.”

Behind the scenes: building the position paper 🔖📚🧐

The European Youth Energy Forum has a goal: making youth voices heard through a position paper “On the role of youth in the future of the European energy transition.” 📝

In the latest phase of the project, our 45 on-site participants have completed their three-months journey of research on what the barriers, the advantages and the indicators of youth engagement are in their own countries and they have voted for best (and worst) practices of youth engagement from all across Europe.

Ageism and youth washing, the skills that young people have developed and can develop to quickly adapt and the sense of urgency that motivates the younger generations are just some of the topics that participants will develop in their position paper.

Tiago is an Energy Engineer with a passion for communications, which is why he joined the Communications Team in EYEN.

In EYEF, he is one of the Coordinators of the event!

Joana is an Innovation Engineer with a passion for communication and graphic design. She’s lived in many different cities but EYEN is her new home! In EYEF, she coordinates the communications for the event.

“The event is going to be an amazing opportunity to prove that youth contributions matter, that young energy experts are skilled, resourceful and committed. I joined the EYEF Team because I don’t want to miss this: it feels like the right place to be!”

Rachel is a second-year Master’s student at EIT InnoEnergy, studying energy for smart cities. In EYEF, she volunteers in the Communications Team as a graphic designer.

Being a partner of the European Sustainable Week, EYEN had the opportunity to speak up about the need for stronger youth engagement in policy decisions and local communities at the biggest conference dedicated to renewables and energy efficiency in Europe.

The Conference was organised by the European Commission and unfolded from the 19th to the 29th of September, through events like the European Youth Energy Day – focussed on youth participation in the energy transition and cutting-edge technologies – and the Policy Talks, bringing together youth, professionals from the energy industry and policy-makers on specific topics.

Youth engagement is a necessary precondition for a just energy transition. With 2022 declared the Year of the Youth by the EU Commission, this year’s European Youth Energy Day, the 26th of September, was a special occasion for EYEN.

On the day, EYEN’s Vice-President – Miguel Mósca – engaged in a dialogue with the European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson and young representatives of the energy industry and NGOs related to the sector.

The talk was a mutual exchange of expectations on the current energy crisis, Europe’s dependency from imports of energy sources, and solutions and inputs on how to best meet emission reduction goals.

For EUSEW’s Policy Talks, our Director of Secretariat Jacopo Sala participated in two panels on the role of youth in the energy transition.

As youth, the first challenge we face in making our voices heard is limited space and time dedicated to our engagement and education in local communities.💭 Through the panels, EYEN advocated for a closer collaboration between educational institutions and energy communities including internships and thesis projects, and an increased safe space for dialogue between different segments of the community. Our stand? In a mutual learning process, youth can and should inform better energy policy decisions on what the next 20 years will look like.

EU Teens4Green’s call for proposal – funded by the European Union and DG Regio – is offering grants of up to €10.000 to young individuals, groups or associations to alleviate the socio-economic disparities of the most carbon-intensive regions of Europe. The call was drafted with the help of EYEN through the EU Teens4Green Think Thank, and it is managed by Startup Europe Regions Network (SERN), Youth and Environment Europe (YEE) and CEE Bankwatch Network – with the support of the association Generation Climate Europe (GCE).

Federico is a renewable energy engineer with a passion for energy policy, citizens engagement and international cooperation. He is the President and Co-Founder of EYEN.

“I co-founded EYEN because there is a need for an organisation that can coordinate, connect and empower youth energy-focused organisations across Europe. EYEN is well placed to trigger a dialogue between different stakeholders and to innovate the way we approach the European energy transition.”

Miguel is Vice-President and co-founder of EYEN, and Private Sector Lead at BABLE Smart Cities. He holds a double Master’s Degree in Energy for Smart Cities and he wishes to grow EYEN to ensure it is the most important point of contact between youth and energy, while empowering young people within the sector.

“We founded EYEN because we saw that youth was and is not taken seriously in energy – an “old fashioned” sector. Age should not be a boundary for impact, and we can see that today: the future European and global leaders are among us, the youth, today. It is only fair that we can choose our own future.”

Jacopo is a Ph.D. Researcher in perovskite-based photovoltaics. In EYEN, he manages the day to day operations of the Network and supports the development of new activities.

“Thinking of sustainability challenges, energy has always fascinated me for its complexity and its cross discipline challenges. With EYEN, I want to empower youth to be a relevant stakeholder, to question the status quo and think out of the box.”

Participate in the EU Teens4Green Project:
funding youth-led actions in Europe’s carbon intensive regions

With a budget of one million euros and grants of up to 10.000 euros, EU Teens4Green is a promising initiative aimed at funding at least 70 projects run by youth in EU carbon-intensive regions covered by the Just Transition Fund. An open call for projects will be launched in September 2022, dedicated to young (15-24 years old) residents in territories eligible for the Just Transition Fund.

Get involved: your help is also needed! Youth and Environment Europe is looking for local facilitators to disseminate the call in local languages, to support young applicants and to mentor them in organising local actions in their countries. You can also share your input to help identify challenge areas for EUTeens4Greens to focus on! Fill out and share this survey on pressing issues for you and your community regarding the just energy transition.

EYEN is providing input on designing the call for applicants and on dissemination and communication efforts as part of the EUTeens4Green Think Tank, a wide group of stakeholders working on youth and energy. The platform is managed by a consortium formed of Startup Europe Regions Network, Youth and Environment Europe, CEE Bankwatch Network with the support of Generation Climate Europe.

New in our Network!

Celebrating our 1st General Assembly: six new member organisations join EYEN and officials are elected!

June brought good news! Since this spring we’ve been officially established as an international non-profit organisation (“Association internationale sans but lucratif”, AISBL) and on June 18th, we came together for our first General Assembly, the highest decision-making body of the Federation. The General Assembly reunited all our Member organisations to elect officials and welcome six new member organisations in our network 🥳

Speaking of, congratulations to our two new Governing Board members: Carlotta Ferri – EYEN Development – and Luciana Miu – EYEN Advocacy and Public Relations! And a very warm welcome to our new members: Bundesverband Junge Energie e.V. (BJE), Future Energy Leaders Portugal (FEL PT), PoliEnergy, Pour un réveil écologique, Reboot and Student Conference “Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Development” (SCEESD).

With now a total of ten Member organisations, very diverse in scope and aims, EYEN is growing with more events – online and in person – from our members, and more opportunities for youth engagement in the important decisions and fundamental dialogues with institutions that shape the energy sector.

Join us for the very first European Youth Energy Forum (EYEF)!

EYEN is organising the very first European Youth Energy Forum (EYEF). An event that connects youth, gathering 45 young Europeans, giving them a unified voice and bringing them together with different stakeholders of the energy sector.

Together, we’re going to build a position paper on the role of youth in the European energy transition and present the results to high-level decision makers and stakeholders of the energy sector – we’re going to take it to the Portuguese Parliament, while also streaming it online!

The event will take place from 19 to 23 November in Pavilhão do Conhecimento, Lisbon. But the work starts from early September, when we’ll start working on the position paper via online sessions.

EYEN is nominated for the #EIT CHANGE Award 2022!

The #EITAwards 2022 nominees are unveiled and Federico Barbieri, on behalf of the European Youth Energy Network, is one of them!
The nominees include 27 outstanding innovators from 15 countries, who are doing great work in accelerating a sustainable future. The aim of the award granted by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) is to “recognise the most promising entrepreneurs and innovators emerging from the EIT’s ecosystem across Europe” and to help them develop new solutions for the pressing topics of our times, from climate, to energy, digitalisation, mobility and many others.

Participate by getting to know the nominees and their amazing work, by watching the online semi-final on the 29th of September and voting for your favourite innovator for the Public Award. Stay tuned to discover who won at the Grand Final on the 11th of October!

EYEN’s going to the European Sustainable Energy Week! 🍀

EYEN is going to #EUSEW2022! This year, the European Sustainable Energy Week is at the core of the European Year of Youth, and EYEN is at the forefront of a number of events that deal with the most pressing challenges of the energy transition, united under #EUSEW2022’s common theme: Going green and digital for Europe’s energy transition.

Promoting EU-Africa cooperation:
EYEN joins the RES4Africa Youth Task Force

We’re glad to announce that EYEN is officially a Member of the RES4Africa Youth Task Force, a panel of young representatives who work to enhance the cooperation with international youth organisations and young energy leaders active in Africa’s just energy transition.

The Youth Task Force gathered in-person for the first time on the 27th of June, at the RES4Africa Foundation event “Youth Empowerment for driving African energy transition” hosted in Milan. EYEN is represented in the Task Force by Luciana Miu – Governing Board Member on EYEN Development and Public Relations – who will pursue our mission of enhancing EU-Africa cooperation and promoting the empowerment of African youth in the energy transition of the continent.

Meet our volunteers

Meet Miklós and Yu-Hsuan! Learn a little about them and why they’re a part of EYEN in the journey to place youth at the heart of the European energy transition.

Miklós works as a designer-engineer and web developer. He joined the EYEN communication team to share his experience to help develop and maintain the EYEN website.

We’re back with big, official news! Learn about our upcoming General Assembly, interesting webinars and other news!

We’re back with big, official news! Since this spring, we’ve been officially established as an international non-profit organisation (“Association internationale sans but lucratif”, AISBL) under Belgian law, headquartered in Brussels. On June 18th, we’ll come together for our first General Assembly, the highest decision-making body of the Federation, elect officials and welcome new member organisations in our network. This means that the paperwork is done🥳 and from next month we’ll be fully operational and ready to reshape youth engagement towards a just, empowered and collaborative European energy transition as the first and only federation of energy-focused youth organisations in Europe. What exciting times to be a young energy changemaker! While we’re busy growing the team and fine-tuning our strategy and even planning an in-person conference, read on for some news and events from EYEN and its members (and scroll down if you want to grow with a growing team).

YES-Europe and Europe-Africa Youth Network are partnering up to bring us an awesome webinar!

EYEN’s Member YES-Europe, is teaming up with the Europe-Africa Youth Network and bringing us the Webinar “African-European exchange on energy transition – how to achieve it together!”

The webinar will approach the challenges and opportunities of the energy transition on both continents and how the issue can be approached jointly. Expert speakers from both Europe and Africa will share their views on the topic and there will also be the opportunity for the audience to share their perspectives.

Find out how you can have a say on the sustainability of European products until June 22nd!

Have you ever wondered if the products you use every day are really sustainable? Or what would have to change to make the whole life cycle of products more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly? Then we have news for you! On March 30th 2022, the European Commission published its latest legislative proposal to enforce sustainability standards for products that are sold and bought in Europe: the Sustainable Products Initiative (SPI).
Would you like to know more about the SPI and what’s in it for the EU’s energy policy and youth? Are you interested in getting involved in the quest towards a circular economy, shaping the laws that will redefine our path towards a more sustainable and energy-efficient Europe?

EYEN participated as a jury member for the European Commission’s Film4Energy Challenge

EYEN participated as member of the Jury in the competition “Film4Energy Challenge” organised by the European Commission between October 2021 and March 2022.
As part of the competition, schools across the EU were invited to create short videos about the importance of Energy Efficiency and the benefits of saving energy for their school, commune or city. The students of 90 schools from 16 EU countries, aged 12 to 15 worked in teams on their projects, and the result is a heterogeneous mix of videos with creative and inspiring messages.

The winners have now been announced, and there is some awesome stuff!

Meet Arianna and Federico! Learn a little about them and why they’re a part of EYEN in the journey to place youth at the heart of the European energy transition.

Arianna is a Master’s student in European and International Environmental Law with experience in legal research. In EYEN, she is content writer for the Communications Team.

We had the first big EYEN Gathering in April!

Do you still remember the special New Year newsletter of the European Youth Energy Network, in which we looked back at our highlights from 2021 and planned for offline team-power and more in 2022? Well, we did it! We set up a small organising team and then finally…between 31 March and 3 April, close to 20 young energy changemakers from the Secretariat and a part of our Member Organisations came together in Brussels for a weekend of co-working and strategising for the year, visits to European institutions and team building fun to strengthen the network!

Meet Adriana and Beatriz! Learn a little about them and why they joined EYEN for the journey to place youth at the heart of the European energy transition.

Adriana is an artist and a changemaker with a degree in Environment and Bio-Resources Management. She is leading EYEN’s Communications Team while also advocating for social justice and so much more (we are pretty sure her days have more than 24 hours).

Learn about the Global Council on Enabling Youth Action for SDG7 and save the date for YES-Europe’s Annual Conference 2022!

These are tragics days for Europe, and we don’t remain untouched. As a European federation, EYEN is founded on the values of democracy, respect, collaboration, equality and accountability. Without discrimination of any sort.

We stand with our friends in Ukraine and continue working hard on what we can most impact: an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable sector in Europe. With youth at the heart of it.

New in our Network

EYEN participated in the Global Council on Enabling Youth Action for SDG7

On February 14, Federico Barbieri, President of EYEN, participated on behalf of EYEN in the Global Council on Enabling Youth Action for SDG7.

Led by IRENA – International Renewable Energy Agency, the Council brought together 18 young leaders, government representatives, expert practitioners and delegates from different institutions and regions, to develop and adopt an action plan with concrete initiatives that can drive forward youth-led action on energy access and the transition to a renewable energy future.
The Council will develop activities around three main objectives:
– Elevate youth voices within the international energy and climate agenda.
– Increase youth-led action, innovation, entrepreneurship and advocacy for SDG7.
– Build the renewable energy skills and capacities of youth.

“The Council grants an opportunity for EYEN to bring the perspective of European youth organisations to an international roundtable, while learning from best practices around the world. The next steps include identifying initial priority action areas and activities for the Council. The first meeting marked the beginning of such cooperation.” – Federico Barbieri

YES-Europe Annual Conference 2022 is coming!

YES-Europe, one of the founding members of EYEN, and the candidate-member PoliENERGY, two NGOs working in energy and sustainability have partnered to organise an amazing event!

Conferences, panel discussions, workshops on the topics of energy and sustainability, networking, and fun times – this is going to be the 2022 Annual Conference! You’ll have the chance to connect with youth as passionate as you are, with companies, startups, and associations.

It’ll take place in person in Torino, Italy on April 22nd and 23rd. Conferences will also be streamed online, but we strongly advise you to participate in person to get the full experience.

Meet Joana and Jim! Learn a little about them and why they couldn’t help but get on board for the journey to place youth at the heart of the European energy transition.

Joana is an Innovation Engineer with a passion for communication and graphic design. She’s lived in many different cities but EYEN is her new home, which she joined to help the Communications Team rock!

“I want the energy transition to be conscious, sensible, creative, responsible, and fair. And for that to happen, it is crucial to include youth’s voice at the discussion table of big decision-makers. EYEN is the best place to be for us: the young energy generation that believes in the impact we can have, and works so hard towards it!” – Joana Sanchez

Jim is finishing his Master’s in Sustainable Energy Technology and Innovation Sciences but he couldn’t wait to help raising youth involvement in the energy transition, which is why he joined EYEN as part of the Partnership Team!

European Youth Energy Network – Time-travel to 2019 ⚡

Read our story! It all began in Canada with three European youth who were shocked by lack of youth participation in energy policy and had a bold idea!

Time-travel to 2019 and read the story of EYEN from its very beginning

Learn how we created the European Youth Energy Network to unite energy-focused youth organisations from across Europe and reshape youth engagement towards a just, empowered and collaborative energy transition.

All good stories begin with ‘Once upon a time…’. Would you like to read ours? Buckle up, we have a tale to tell!

Once upon a time there were three engaged youth from three different European countries who met at a conference in Canada (close by, right?). The year was 2019 and May was the month. Their names were Luciana, Miguel and Federico and they were shocked by the lack of youth participation in high-level debates concerning energy policy, so they had a bold idea: it was time to create an organisation to catalyse youth engagement in the European energy transition! Our brave heroes returned to Europe and got to work. It was the summer of 2019 when they got in touch with the Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER) of the European Commission, in order to ensure the engagement of youth across different events and policymaking forums. In December, a concept note of the European Youth Energy Network was presented to the DG ENER Research & Innovation Unit.

Soon many more would join our three heroes in their epic adventure. Together, after working tirelessly for more than a year they officially launched the organisation on 29 June 2021. EYEN was born! EYEN, the Network of Networks placing youth at the heart of the European energy transition and uniting energy-focused youth organisations.
This is only the first chapter of our story. Sara is an energy engineer turned full-stack developer. She is part of our communications team: programming, web development, UX design… you name it, she’s got it!

The European Year of Youth 2022: EYEN will contribute to long-lasting activities in Europe and its member states

This is big! The EU has designated 2022 the European Year of Youth (EYY), as announced by President von der Leyen in her 2021 State of the Union Address and following the political agreement between the European Parliament and the Council. The Commission will coordinate throughout 2022 a range of activities in close contact with the European Parliament, the Member States, regional and local authorities, youth organisations and young people themselves.
